I wonder why I cannot play chess with myself
They say it is because I will always know my own next move.
But in life, I tell them, I usually do not know
Where I am headed.
Do I suddenly know my own mind
When I am reduced to sixty-four black and white squares?
I do not think so.
But playing games against myself is futile.
For, however many victories I accumulate
I will always lose as many
And maybe more.
