I donned the soccer parent/spouse costume this weekend for a big tournament. It was like being on another planet, but here are my takeaways.
Parents: The refs are doing the best they can out there. Trust me. I'm married to one. I get frustrated too, but know this: You can also take the classes and ref the games if you feel like you can do a better job - it's very possible you can! For the love of all that is holy: Do not let your frustration with the officials lead you to yelling to your kid to play dirty - it embarrasses your kid, makes the ref watch him/her much more closely, and does nothing for his/her team.
Players: Clean, aggressive, and smart soccer is the best soccer. You know what to do out there. Sometimes you're going to get called for shit. Opponents will sometimes not get called for shit. PLAY ON.
I am now back to my regularly scheduled programming until Friday, when we do it all over again.
