If Music Be the Food of Love - a poem written entirely from song lyrics found in my Spotify Top Songs of 2018 playlist
What a waste:
I will never fall in love. No,
I left myself behind,
shadows of the mess you made.
I miss the days when I pretended with you.
Better to leave it unsaid,
they don’t wanna hear.
Desdemona, won’t you liberate me?
How can I explain
you got a beautiful face but got nothing to say?
Now we’re hanging on by a heartbeat,
remember how we knew love was here to stay?
Our rules, our dreams, we’re blind.
You make my heart beat like the rain,
you really know how to make me cry.
Are you the answer, I shouldn’t wonder.
I think about it every day and night, I can’t let go.
And I’ll tell you that I am fine,
but I’m at an all time low,
I’m spinning around in circles.
I heard heaven and thunder cry,
it’s slipping away, there’s nothing we can do.
This is wrong but I can’t help but feel like
we’re looking for light inside an ocean of night.
Am I here in vain?
Been waiting for somebody else to carry me,
and I don't want to see another night
once we've both said our goodbyes.
What a waste of blood and sweat:
I want to feel something again.
Oh, you let your feet run wild,
I know I won’t be leaving here with you.
I don’t even know what
I will say. I knew it all along?--
there’s something tragic, but almost pure.
And you need to know:
a thousand times I've seen this road,
running through a red light
like we’re trying to burn the night away.
I confess, I messed up.
Hate to be the one that told you so.
I loved you then and I love you now,
breathed so deep I thought I’d drown.
I'm sick and tired of this whole situation
and when you're close I feel like coming undone.
Now we're here it's been so long.
In the fever I let you go,
and I've trained myself to give up on the past 'cause
I do not deserve to wait around forever.
I'm not trying to change your mind.
We love each other in theory,
I always thought that things would change but they never did.
Spoke a lot of words, I don't know if I spoke the truth.
Now you'll be missing from the photographs,
don’t you break my faded heart.
I’m too tired at night to call your name.
We might be hollow, but we're brave:
it's better to feel pain than nothing at all.
I'm not saying you lied,
we both said it's a beautiful try.
If you’re troubled and hurt,
I’d rather be sad with you--
it’s hard to explain.
Nothing's ever built to last.
I could feel the tension,
isn’t it tragic?--
How strange that I don’t know you at all.
I can’t help but want oceans to part,
but you couldn’t resist.
Sometimes you gotta bleed to know.
You know I'll remember you,
I chose a path and I'm not looking back.
All the stages and the stars,
we thought everyone was on our side,
and so it goes, we found our sweet disaster.
I'm gone for good.
I need something to take away the remains of your name,
echoes of your footsteps on the stairs,
the rest I can do without.
Have you ever wanted to disappear?
It’s always different,
we've made every mistake—
wake up and notice you’re someone you’re not.
We keep counting all the fresh starts we had,
I'll fly another white flag over us.
Won't take no for an answer anymore,
maybe we can save ourselves, or maybe we won't.
Say that you miss me,
I said, "That's a lie."
Promised it all but you lied.
No one knows who you are,
but I will remember your light.
Wish that we could go back in time,
but don't you worry, I can handle it.
Take my hand through the flames,
put out your beating heart.
Got your voice in my head,
tell me that I'm alright.
These thoughts of you will die
and I bet sometimes you wonder about me.
a/n: this past week, Spotify sent out a playlist to every user with their top 100 songs of 2018. every line in this poem is a lyric taken from the songs included in mine. two of the songs were piano solos and one was a remix of another song included, so three of the songs actually have two lyrics included to make up for the deficit. here's the link to my playlist if you'd like to see which songs were used (assuming the link works, lol): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1EjlC5uMQPX0HW #Writing #Poetry #Poems4Procrastination #Spotify #Lyrics
