'Chasing Coral,' the documentary that mapped out the dying process of coral worldwide, left a big impression on Louise Mertens and became the source of inspiration for her new art series 'SEE'. For many years, Louise has been fascinated & concerned by the effects of global warming. As an artist she subtly presents this theme, and tries to unravel the beauty of the coral , whilst it is still in existence. She looks at the aesthetics of the perishable, the vulnerable and the fragile straight in the eye. She does not want us to avoid the subject due to powerlessness or ignorance. ‘SEE’ shows the beauty of the Coral's dying process, a living animal that has been drastically decreasing in numbers over the years. The beautiful colors that corals expose when they take their last breath, the white skeletons, the gray inanimate colors and the elegant algae that envelop the dead coral.
For the first time, Louise makes a complete series without using portraits or the human form. "I felt the need to step out of my comfort zone, to observe in a different way, further, more intensely, whilst Still looking for that special, 'extraterrestrial' element that I feel drawn to." .
"Wonders lie beyond our awareness, below our sea level."
