We're working on how handle media embeds. The basic problem is third party embeds displaying ads on Ello, our ad-free wonderland.
We're considering a few options —
OPTION 1: Only allow embedded video and sound files on Ello that are from services that are ad-free. So, we would support Vimeo, Bandcamp, and others — but we would not support Soundcloud or YouTube at all.
OPTION 2: Allow users to embed YouTube, Soundcloud, and other services that that have ads — but let each Ello user decide whether they want to show or hide all posts that contain these services. It would work like this: on your settings page there would be on on/off switch. Turn it on, and you would be able to see content with embedded ads. Turn it off, and posts that contain video and sound files from services that serve embedded ads would be hidden from you completely.
I also think there could be a 3rd option —
OPTION 3 Embed ad-free services and play them in-stream. For services that serve ads, show a thumbnail and a play link. Clicking will open that media in a new window.
