Beirut City Center, commonly known as ‘The Dome’ or ‘The Egg’. Designed by Joseph Philippe Karam in 1965, the complex was meant to be the biggest shopping mall in the Middle East at the time, with an egg-shaped shell housing a movie theatre. The building was left unfinished after the civil war.
I didn’t want to celebrate this project in its current condition, so I based my illustration on Karam’s original drawing. Naturally, it’s not 100% accurate, and I’m not an architect, but it’s nice to reimagine what it would have looked like in a parallel universe... Original plan and info from the architect’s website.
