Madalyn's Top 5 Ello Tips
I love being an early adopter to new social network sites. I've been hearing about Ello for a few weeks now and am excited to have gotten my invite today. Thank you @debsanderrol! Below are my 5 tips that will help you get started.
1. Upload A Great Profile Image
Do not post anything or follow anyone until you have uploaded a profile image. Nobody wants to look at the ugly white Ello circle in its place. This is the equivalent of the Twitter egg and trust me when I say that no one here will take you seriously. You'll end up in everyone's "Noise" folder. Who wants that?? Right now I have four dear friends in my "Friends" folder with no profile image. See attached image. I'm staring at their white Ello circle rather than their face. It's terrible! If my friends don't post a profile image soon, they will get thrown into my "Noise" folder. This is a social network. I want to connect with you. Show yourself and be social!
2. Ello Loves Emoji's! (who made up that name emoji??)
The quickest way to post an emoticon without memorizing it, is using this awesome cheat sheet. What's really cool is if you click on the individual emoticon, it will copy it onto your computer's clipboard for easy copying and pasting. And as a bonus, the emoticon can be done by typing this without the spaces : ello : http://www.emoji-cheat-sheet.com
3. The Difference Between Friends and Noise
You have probably noticed two tabs at the top left side of your page. One says "Friends" and the other says "Noise." This is Ello's system to keep your feed de-cluttered. Put the people you care about most in Friends and and everyone else in Noise. Friends will display in a nice expanded format whereas Noise is a condensed, yet easy-to-view layout. This is Ello's way of being brilliant because few people understand and use Twitter and Facebook lists. They get lots of clutter and frustration. Ello has simplified it with these two choices. Think of it as two folders. You can easily move people and even drag them between Friends and Noise. And the best part, no one except you can see which folder they are in. They just see you are following them. You may ask, "Why bother following people you don't know or really care about?" Here's the deal, I want to see every post from a select group of friends and influencers. But I also want to follow people where I may not care to see everything but I don't want to miss all of their posts either. Oh the dilemma! This is where Friends and Noise will come in handy. And if I later choose, I can easily move them to the other folder or unfollow them all together. I like these choices. It's simple and easy.
4. How To Format Text Posts
Ello allows you to control your text by adding in bold, italics and links. It's quite simple and easy to do. Just highlight the text and you'll be prompted with a B, I and an arrow. Click on the arrow for the link. If you'd like more flexibility you can use Ello Markdown which is basically a series of formatting commands. It's something techies do in their sleep. LOL. Read more about it here.
5. How Do You Search For People?
There has been some confusion as to where you go to search for friends. Start by clicking on the Discover button at the top left side of page. It's a small icon of a person and a plus sign (I hope that made sense). Or make it easy and click here. Once there, it will say Search at the top. Click on that to clear it and start your search. What I have found is that you'll need to know the correct username otherwise you might not find who you are looking for. Be sure to do one word, no spaces. So for instance, I was looking for my friend Allison Shaw. Typing it as Allison Shaw only produces a search for Allison. It's as if the space cancelled out the second word. When I did it as one word, allisonshaw, it found allisonshaw but it was not my friend. Allison used her Twitter handle, manicmonkee. Not everyone will find you in a simple name search. And that is okay. You'll need to promote harder. Make people aware. In the big picture, you are better off using the same handles across all your social media. So for instance you can find me at Facebook.com/madalynsklar, Twitter.com/madalynsklar, Instagram.com/madalynsklar and ello.co/madalynsklar. For my friend Allison, she uses ManicMonkee across the board because that is her brand. Keep it consistent!
5.5 Ello Is Still In Beta (Okay one more thing!)
Please keep in mind that Ello is still in beta which means it's not perfect. So don't compare this to Facebook and Twitter. It's going to be buggy from time to time. Ello will be updating and adding new features regularly. Pat yourself on the the back because you are an early adopter to what might be the next big thing. But don't hold your breath. It's too early to tell where this will go.
I'd love your feedback. Please comment below and share your thoughts and advice. Thanks!
