I just reminded myself how awesome Einstein on the Beach is (I wish I could actually see the thing at some point, just to get some visual context). I first listened to it once something like a decade ago, after hearing something about Philip Glass's influence on electronic music. I listened to a few seconds of a couple tracks, and right then an thee decided it was shit and got rid of it. And now I love it. Part of that is probably a circuitous path that lead me back to Glass, via Koyaanisqatsi some years later, and random late night purchases of mp3s on amazon on the cheap. Tastes do indeed change as one gets older, but I think that context also had a part to play. One of those cheap amazon purchases was a copy of Steve Reich's Four Organs. Bought off a 30 second sample and a $2 sticker price, the first time I tried listening to it (and this is after I started into an appreciation of Glass and Reich and started poking about in minimalism) The first minute as it were, I was crushed, it sounded like repetitive crap... until I picked it up again and forced myself to listen to the whole thing. Ok, I get it now.
