MARICRUZ PRIETO @cruz.prieto
I am a Spanish artist who works and lives in Cambridge. Since I started creating, my paintings, drawings and small sculptures have been the medium through which I have researched about the identity of women in our current world, our roles as lovers, mothers and workers and our relationships with our own bodies.
The starting point of my work was born a few years ago when I began to portray Eva in her Eden. Most of these pieces were exhibited in the two solos: the body of Eva and Welcome future. Since the day that capricious and guilty woman appeared in my work, I have been painting and drawing the Paradise and everything inside it. The sacred bread, the tempting apples and the evil serpent have been sharing the spotlight with the woman who could not resist her instincts and that is why we were expelled from Paradise, punished to work to eat and to give birth in pain.
Now I'm working on new pieces made mainly in ink, ballpen and watercolor and with a new iconography: Goddesses holding hands, nests and snakes floating in the universe.
Goddesses and snakes is a new series of more mature, reflective and profound works in the search of concepts such as fertility, motherhood and the feminine, but also new worries like life and death and where humanity comes from.
Goddesses and snakes is a series of recently born works but still in progress and growing day by day. A series of works that I am enjoying creating and in which you can appreciate the contrast between the fluid, free and random spot of ink and watercolor with the controlled, soft, perennial and indelible strokes of ballpen.
My Goddesses are goddesses because they give birth and bring life. They are creation, womb, nest, the beginning, the universe and Everything, they are even life and death simultaneously. They are women.
