Highly inventive in its suggestive post-apocalyptic sci-fi ingredients, Tarkovsky absorbs the viewer with an enveloping, introspective experience, drenched in a beautiful sepia monochrome palette, alternated with bursts of colour. It’s an allegory which tests the perception of the viewer with a confrontation of the self and its desires. Little known fact: In 1957, a nuclear accident took place near Chelyabinsk, Russia, polluting several hundred kilometres and leaving the surroundings abandoned. There was no official mention of this incident at the time. This area was the inspiration for ‘The Zone’.
