Discussing the first time anyone in the MTV offices saw U2’s “I Will Follow” video, TV executive Judy McGrath told the authors of I WANT MY MTV: THE UNCENSORED STORY OF THE VIDEO REVOLUTION: “I was like, ‘Oh my God, who is this singer in the mullet?’” This would’ve been some time in the early ’80s. The word “mullet” wasn’t used to describe that haircut until the Beastie Boys in ‘94 and Grand Royal magazine in ‘95. (According to the OED.)
