It was very difficult to choose just three images, but presented here are samples from three different 'series' of my portraits of transexuals in Mexico City. I arrived in Mexico City a little over a year ago, and through embracing the place I met the first of my models... people transitioning in a city that is constantly changing. My goal with these portraits is to talk to a broad audience, to allow those who might otherwise feel uncomfortable with the subject matter to engage with it. There are so many rhetorics today about what make us different but a progressive view of the future is one where such categorisations are no longer necessary... ultimately all art is a mirror and differences are only useful to those who want them to exist. I try to diminish any shock value through technique, incorporating grainy photography with textures and posters ripped from the walls of Mexico City, to create a safe space for you to be able to share with these beautiful personalities. I have been amazed by the response these images have generated from all over the word with people of wildly differing socio-economic backgrounds - the general feeling is that I am showing them something that has always been there but presenting it in a way that allows them to look at it without shame - which is wonderful.
Happy new year everyone!
oh yeah... and it's ... #NSFW
