Van Gogh was considerably a troubled soul, but a realistic one at that. No matter what he painted there was a sense of understanding, connection, and deep passion for each work of art. As a painter I feel his awareness to the world in which he painted. I connected with the idea of his anxiety as a source of trying to connect with the world in his paintings. Artist alone are subjects of observation, reality, anxiety, and awareness. It was said that Van Gogh would eat yellow paint because thought that was the happiest color and wanted to be happy. All though crazy, it seemed like a sensible idea, only fueling his desire to find a cure to make himself right. I also connected with the idea of his paintings being a form of religion to him, such as the renaissance painting representing biblical stories. When I create a work of art, or have my sketchbook, I too look at it as a form of my own twisted idea of religion. Finding a certain peace and comfort in each work of art. A painting should be viewed as an individual portal to someone else’s story line. Even if they do not appear understandable to the viewer, there is still that sense of raw unconfined emotion and reverence for something you might not be aware of.
