"The Sum of My Parts"
Made of stoneware, separate cups put together form the shape of a woman. In this work, I explore the varying components that inform my daily life as a woman of color. As a woman, it seems my identity is often compartmentalized, and then compared to that of an ideal man. In this work the different pieces don’t quite all fit together perfectly, one piece is missing and the finished form of the woman is truncated. This reflects the sense of inadequacy and objectification I and possibly other women feel every single day, in most every aspect of life. Each separate piece is meant to be a cup, but since they are odd shapes they are non-functional. Although the separate pieces offer no use, together, a representation of a thriving woman emerges.
