Day 321 - Fire and Air
Three ways to let go:
Realize they have their own lives to live
Love them enough to let them live their own lives
Love yourself well enough not to try and live someone else's life
We celebrated Samhain recently. During our ritual we wrote letters to our beloved dead. Later we burned the letters and chanted softly as our thoughts were carried on fire and air to the Other Side. It's a lovely ceremony, and one that allows us to release the pain we hold onto so strongly. For some of us, it is the only means we have to release our hold; we have no other ways.
It's even harder when the ones we must release are still in our lives. There they are, often facing challenges we faced long ago. We want to help them, to cushion their inevitable fall, to keep them with us. But if we truly love them, we must let them go. And in doing so we must love ourselves and fill that emptiness with our own lives.
We celebrated Samhain recently. I wrote a letter in my mind to my son, and released him into his own life. I burned away the ties that bind, and turned resolutely away to continue my own life. This other side feels lonely, but it's the right place to be. Fire and Air carry me to my own destiny.
