Day 361 - Not Me
Three I am not responsible for :
What others think
What others do
What others say
Our client stood up in front of the room before we started the investigation.
"Guys, this is Mike. He's going to lead us, find out what went wrong, even if he does look like one of 'those' guys."
His staff dutifully laughed and stepped in to throw more comments at me about how I needed to be careful or they'd shave my head and make a man out of me.
Typical. It was West Texas, after all.
Everyone looked at me. My boss, whose shaven head fit all their preconceptions, also looked at me, but warily.
I stood and smiled, a big broad smile at them all. My boss lowered his head so no one could see him wince. He knows me very well.
"Thanks, Steve. I appreciate it. And I'd like y'all to know that my hair is very useful. It's my asshole detector, you see. Not that I expect any of you to be assholes, but in case you are, we'll all know that real quick. And that's a good thing to know up front, in these things, 'cause we're trying to find out what happened."
"We're here to prevent our friends and coworkers from getting hurt. We're not here to prance and posture, after all. So, let's get real, and let's get started finding out what happened. "
I'm not responsible for what others think, do or say, but I AM responsible for letting them make me a victim.
So mote it be.
