Day 357 - Tooled
Three things to consider:
A tool not used is not a tool
Spirituality from without is not spirituality
Love not given, never was
Our lives are full of potential energy. For some of us, there's more than for others. We even say things like "... but she has so much potential!" or, sadly, "such a waste of potential." But those are just opinions. And just like ass holes, they're common and they smell.
For many of us, the tools we are given are used as ornaments, instead of simply being used. We talk about them, bring them out and admire them, show them off, perhaps even take an experimental swipe with one. But then we place them back on the shelf.
We've been shown what the end product should be, you see, of using some particular tool. We've been shown how bright and shiny it is. But we've seldom been shown the tool in action, or the rough-work that remains from just one pass of some wonderful tool.
And so we fear that we cannot reach that desired state of perceived perfection. Rightly so! That tool user only showed us the end goal, not the discarded attempts. So, when we allow that fear to overcome our own potential, we set the tool aside for fear of imperfect work.
Our tool is no longer a tool when we are afraid to use it. Our spirituality is never expressed when we try to use another's spiritual tools, and we do not learn to love the in-between, the rough-cuts left by our trembling hands on the woodwork of our lives.
Potential, will not be. Practice, is. Perfection never was.
