Leveling up in Real Life: Day One
This leveling idea occurred to me some time ago but it took awhile to percolate and even longer to express. So I made some small changes in the past few months that I just want to record here.
I didn't really start eating better but I cut out soft drinks, cut back on alcohol, and started eating a bit less.
Result? I've lost 10lbs since about Christmas. (165lbs down to 155lbs)
I didn't really embrace the idea of a cleaner home but I did start decluttering. For me this involved culling books, board games, kitchen items and clothes from closets, cupboards and shelves and stacking them in a mostly unused room.... where they have sat ignored for several weeks. I decided that it didn't count until I actually got rid of stuff so I must now load my car up and then actually drop things off at a charity shop.
Result: 2 carloads have been dropped off and at least one more will be this week!
Intertwined with that last point: in culling my clothes I decided to try an idea I read on a blog, might have been The minimalists or The 333 challenge, to limit the colors I wear. I resisted this idea initially because who wants limits? Variety is fun! I'll get bored if I cut colors! But, like most people in the over-developed world, I had too many clothes. (I probably still do) So, aside from underthings and socks, I tried to limit my wardrobe to some sort of color families: I've left myself with black, white, gray, tans/browns, maroon(ish), navy, 2 purple items, and mostly duller greens. I haven't applied this to my summer dresses, which are crazy hippie-patterned affairs, or to the clothes I wear to work. (I work in a gym and in my current out-of-shapeness I'm just camouflaging myself)
Result: all my clothes go together and putting outfits together is less stressful. I feel more confident about my choices and smile more, people have noticed.
I am going to start using the free gym membership I've had for almost a year now. No matter how shy I am. I started doing sit ups (5) and leg lifts (40) this morning. (at home) I'm honestly stunned at how out of shape I am. When I last did these activities I was up to 25 sit ups and over 100 leg lifts.
I will drop off, bare minimum, 1 load of books, games etc at the charity shops.
This morning I will plan meals for the week and do the shopping but I will also be learning/adding some new, healthier meals into the mix. In a bit of synergy this helps me master new cooking techniques And eat healthier.
I will continue to go through the house organizing, cleaning and decluttering.
I will set aside at least a few hours to finally put brush to canvas again and start the first in a series of paintings I've been seeing in my head for a few months.
I think that's plenty for now, I will let you know how it all goes.
