CRASH BOOM! Leveling up in Real Life: BUDGET.
If you read my previous post about leveling up, I put forth all kinds of ideas of where I needed to start; health, diet, losing weight, learning cooking techniques, decluttering and so forth. I got a small start on physical activity and I've been eating better, lots of fruit and veg. ... but I sort of slammed into an area I hadn't thought of: Budgeting.
Things never go as planned. I have something of a budget but it has proved inadequate. We had a big furnace repair last month and I had to pay the bill for that, add all the other bills and expenses in and now we're short. I've got next week off, unpaid, as well, another hit to our funds. So the budget has been brought to the fore. I'm working on getting our food expenses under better control. Dropping alcohol and soft drinks helped some but I still spend too much on groceries. Though we tend to eat out cheaply we still spend too much on that too. I wish I could get the electric bill down but that might not be possible. I disengaged the little fridge but it hasn't made much difference. We don't spend much on entertainment, I get our clothes as inexpensively as I can, there's heating oil, wood for the stove, gas and maintenance for the cars, Bug's school fees, medicines and such. There's so much, and I'm not entirely sure what we spend on all of it. I guess step one is tracking all our expenses.
Once the budget is under control, and we start accumulating a little bit, maybe we can look into a way to get some of our money to actually grow. A rainy day fund would be a good thing too.
