From my original ideas I have decided to stick with the skull design. I would like to work with different materials like glass, wood, and leather. Honestly something that really inspired my idea was the design I printed on my leaf at the lab on Tuesday.
This is just an example of where my idea came from. For my project I will be creating my own patter and style of skull because this one is a bit to cartoonish. From my last post where I posted a sketch I was not completely satisfied with the look so I decided to change and use some of the geometric designs I constructed in class. I also want to use some mandala designs because I want to experiment with the laser cutters power and make cut outs on the material.
I would like to use a pattern like the one below so that I can experiment a bit with cutting some pieces out. This way I can layer two materials and the material at the bottoms can show through
As far as materials go, I am leaning towards working with leather and wood so that I can over lap these two. I would like to cut out the actual skull from the leather with the designs etched on it and with some cut out. That would be placed over a wood panel which would also have a design or pattern (probably like the one above) on the wood. I have researched which leathers are good for laser cutting and pretty much all of them are good. However, I was going towards synthetic leather because it would be the easiest to find, and the cheapest. I want my project to end up being a 8X8 piece.
