For the past 16 months, I've been working on a documentary landscape project, called 'The Downs'. The project was borne out of a desire to document a local area of outstanding natural beauty. Nestled between the counties of Dorset and Wiltshire in the South of England, this area is home to farmers, dog-walkers, paragliders, hobbyists and lots of livestock.
The obvious choice would have been to create a simple landscape project, but those are in plentiful supply. Instead, I wanted to scratch beneath the surface to become more intimate with the area itself. What started as a simple idea of capturing a different perspective grew into something much bigger, and the idea of documenting the landscape over 4 seasons began to take shape. I've now been shooting on the Downs for well over a year, using a number of different approaches to my photography and capturing the drama, tranquility and beauty of this area that I like to call...home.
Eventually, the project will be exhibited and possibly become a book. For now, though, the work continues and you can see a few more images on my website, www.michaelbeecham.com. I'd love to hear from you about the project, what your thoughts are, what is stirred in you as you look at the images, etc.
