Dear Japan, "revitalizing" your old neighborhood shopping areas is nothing more than a sad attempt to at staving off the inevitable. While I feel bad for the shop owners, those old neighborhood shopping arcades were never meant to be hubs of major shopping to begin with. Yes, they had aspirations and certainly were packed in their heyday, but that was when people had to/could walk or bicycle most places. With the advent of the car... well, truth is, those places have nothing to offer the modern Japanese shoppers and nothing will bring them back. "Revitalization" is a sad, sad waste of taxpayer money. Dogs and Demons*.
