Living in a small city in northwest Japan like I do, I tend to be the last to come upon great things. Rest assured though, it's often my social media friends who tune me into the most niche things they can find because they know of my love for the weird.
I recently discovered #vaporwave music after bumping into an odd image or two on the Internet Superhighwebs. Apparently "started" by a young woman who goes by the moniker Vektroid (formerly known as Laserdisc Visions -- Bandcamp page), she describes her work as an "exposé of late capitalism", while others call it "new cyber-pop unconscious".
Whatever your flavor, it is usually very mellow, and I find it stimulating in a haunting way that as some others have put, is difficult to capture in words.
But don't take my word for it, check the album that kicked off this dreamy genre of cyber-Orientalism -- New Dreams Ltd.
