I painted this on the island of Ios, Greece in 1999 on an old sailboat canvas that a local fisherman gave me. It uses blue pigments native to Greece that I found in Athens and when I applied the paint it started doing these tiny, crazy fractal designs because there was so much salt in the canvas.
The woman who modeled for the female pose was a 6ft tall trapeze artist from Perth, AU and I still wonder what she is up these days. I created this painting to illustrate the complex and sometimes surreal dance between people who are deeply attracted to each other and only get a tiny fragment of time to burn it all out in. Intense, bright and full of emotion and passion.
