[this is old but whatever]
i celebrate myself and sing myself,
the battered roads these calloused feet have travelled and
the mountains they have yet to climb
(there are empires, there are always empires, ones to build and ones
to claim and ones to tear down)
i do not deign to assume power (power is power is power are illusions) and a mind has
served me better - old, withered maps and crisp new books
and golden happiness are all I need to know of ambition.
(i wouldn't conform myself with those things, however) - i
keep traveling and keep picking fruit from a tree they call life,
power is power is knowledge: I'd conform myself
in my past life i must have been a lion: i cannot stand cages
and even on my best days I have claws; or perhaps a bird: talons are just as sharp. a roar or a song or a semi-tame human's speech, they're all just as well, so long as i am heard.
i need storms for my rage, blizzards, sleet, hail, apocalyptical rains; I am nothing less
than fire, i am nothing less than ice. i love extremes, the peril, the thrill -
mediocrity is boring and boring is evil and when boring dies,
boring stays dead, buried in sand, and not the most astute eye or the luckiest of wanderers can pick it up.
i go from tsaritsa to revolutionary, viking to poet, nomad to adventurer, witch to spectator,
having one name is a terrible crime to yourself, as
names wear down much too easily and much too quickly.
"you are only a girl," they say, as if it were a bullet or an arrow or a stone. i am a girl and
i stand for other girls. a girl is only as little as she wants to be, no less.
i do not fear death, when there are shallower things
to fear - bees and broken nails and getting back up after
you've fallen down because you never know what's waiting for you once you do.
the universe that was born long ago continues
to be born again; there is stardust in my veins and just as much in yours.
my likeness set in stone would be pleasant, i
suppose, but constellations last far longer
(there are empires, there are always empires, and stars do not understand the word 'ruins'.)
