Julian for apple picking (organic, of course, at $10 a peck or about $2 a pound) today. Had a good time. Picked a bunch of apples (3 pecks) and generally had a lovely afternoon.
Afterwards went to dinner with a few of the other families. We were all done when a guy wandered in: older, Vietnam Vet cap. Shouted loudly at the people he came to see. Then proceeded to walk around our table and announce loudly that we were his heroes...for having all these white babies.
So, we had, as best as I can tell, a few American-born people there, but Bridgette is Canadian by birth, Sabina is Slavic (Polish/Montenegran?), Ignacio is Mexican, and at least three others are also European. On top of that, I'm a dual-citizen.
So, anyway, being done, we left the guy and his friends there.
But that's the kind of place Julian is. A lot of California is like that when you get away from the cities. You may hear it called a "liberal paradise" (or something more derogatory in the same vein) but the truth is that there's a load of backwards idiots floating around still. Like the guy whose sign you pass on the 78 headed out to Julian who has done nothing but bitch about Obama for, well, probably since November 2008, though I've not been around that long to verify.
Make the claim all you want that racism is dead in America. Anyone who visits someplace like Julian will certainly be able to tell you that's incorrect after not too much time on the ground.
