My name is Madeline (Lulu) Swainhart and I am studying photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands.
This series is an act of resistance against the current societal norms towards a woman's menstrual cycle. As a young woman in today's society I have found it difficult to allow myself to be open about my cycle. In this work I am questioning my own attitude towards my period. For my own self discovery I spent 24 hours free bleeding, and during this precious time with myself and my blood I was able to see my cycle for what it really is. It is what makes me a woman. It is strength, and beauty. This work is an effort to reinforce woman's understanding of her body.
