I'm Lumi Tuomi, 20 year old artist from Finland, studying Photography at the Royal Academy of Art The Hague. I'm interested in identity and have been exploring this in my self-portraits for four years.
I made this series one year ago trying to accept myself as I suffer from alopecia - autoimmunity disease that causes hairloss all over your body. As a woman, losing your hair feels like losing a part of your identity - it changes how you view yourself and how others view you.
Losing my hair again after five years I felt like I was losing my femininity and that I wasn’t allowed to be seen as beautiful anymore - only because of the way I viewed myself.
From this I’ve grown through taking self-portraits and trying to find beauty in my faults. At the same time showing this to the world and wishing to spread awareness of alopecia - and the strong women suffering from it. Now, a year later, I roam the world with different wigs, hats or my bald head - just being myself and celebrating strong women.
