"The Returned" isn't so much a horror film as it is a tragic medical romance/suspense film. A zombie outbreak happens, and a protein is extracted from the CSF of terminated undead to stave off the effects of the virus on the infected living. However the reduction of the undead means supplies are dwindling, and one young doctor sees it coming and begins hoarding doses for her husband. Activists lash out violently against the infected and the government sets up internment camps due to the shortage as drug developers race to produce a synthetic protein. Fear and paranoia run high as everyone is now out there for themselves. The film channels the early days of AIDS, WWII mentality as well as overtones of some of Rod Serling's works.
