Text forming a picture ... Or a picture forming text ?
Those two portraits were made with custom ink stamps carved on rubber erasers and black ink on paper (size 42 x 30 cm).
(This process is shown in details on pictures below.)
First portrait represents Nadejda Tolokonnikova from the Pussy Riot, using two rubber stamps "RIGHTS" and "POWER".
Second portrait represents Vladimir Putin, created with a rubber stamp which says "SILENCE".
These two personalities represents the extreme opposites of what's possible to be (hierarchically, humanly, ideologically, ...) in our modern societies.
There is no right or wrong way to be, being "alive" is the only way to be that unites us all.
My goal was to challenge relationships between "words" and "images" by some kind of visual paradox based on distance :
Far away, those portraits only seems graphical, whereas they slowly becomes textual while moving closer.

Nishe is a French visual artist whose textual and visual polysemic creations revolve around different concepts, processes and themes :
Text/image duality, interpretation, perception, deciphering, questioning, context and temporality.
Inspired by Visual and Concrete Poetry, her experimental works contains cryptic words playing around those ideas of perception of words and images, often by playing with physical distance, deconstructing, blurring and mixing up traditional ways of reading a word. Each work is an invitation to think about the whole wide different (and often very personal) meanings a simple word can take for us.
