Marina Abramovic's Advice for The Young Artist
Performed by Noah Witke
This was the most challenging art piece I have ever done. I stepped into my masking tape square, sat on the hard linoleum floor, and closed my eyes for the duration of the performance. I was immobile for over two hours, slowly drinking a pitcher of water. I felt completely vulnerable, and yet completely secure.
And yet art extends outside of my square of influence, the art is not only me, it is also the observers. The art is the young man who took his entire lunch break to watch and try to get me to break my concentration. The art is the people who asked questions and worked together to find answers. The art is that students were late to class to watch the final minutes, only to be chased away by the vice principal.
The art is the shared experience of confusion and discovery.
