My villa is connected to two other villas and we all share a pool. One of my neighbors is also my/our landlord. They are from Bahrain and Kuwait and they are so nice and kind to me. I have had such amazing experiences with them. Even when we disagree with how a villa thing should be handled, in the end they take care of me and are really helpful.
My other neighbor is another family from America. Ones who don't embrace the experience much and are very set in their superstitions and ways.
A year ago before Ramadan I asked my landlords if I could be outside and swim during Ramadan. I know they are extra conservative during this time. They said that it was fine! All they asked of me was to not eat or drink outside because they could see out there. I understood! If I was fasting for hours in a day, I don't think I would want to see food either.
I just looked out my kitchen window. The neighbor's kids are outside.
They are eating.
It is still daylight.
The cultural insensitivity abounds.
