My name is Marcus Hammerschmitt. This is my submission to Not For Print Issue 02 — Resist. From top to bottom:
1) Suns & guns
The bill of a supposedly Kurdish group in Germany, calling for resistance against Turkey's politics of oppression against the Kurds. Being ripped in half by somebody not happy with the poster's message.
2) Almost clean
Somebody in Germany used spray paint to voice his opinion that war creates terror ("Krieg macht Terror"). The wall's owner tried to remove the paint with limited success.
3) Bal champêtre
A German policeman in riot gear, doing his thing.
Didn't like the situation, but I like how you can extract the human figure from a seemingly complete abstract here. Visor of helmet and face (partially occluded by the helmet) are in the upper left. You can make out the green uniform, his left arm to the picture's right and a hint of belt and belt buckle at the lower edge.
This was shot during a nazi rally in Tübingen/Germany in 2007, where the police defended the constitutional right of the nazis to threaten minorities with extermination. Four years later it was revealed a group of nazis called NSU ("Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund"/"National Socialist Unterground") had been on a killing spree for six years (between 2000 and 2006) plus robbing banks from 1999 to 2011 (not to mention their two bombings in 2001 and 2004) without the German police and the general public even recognizing there were terrorists at work. There is good reason to believe a fraction of the German security apparatus willfully looked the other way or even actively helped the perpetrators to hide in plain sight for so long – even though one of their own fell victim to them. This is the actual extent to which German authorities have learned from Germany's nazi past.
The NSU targeted immigrants, also killing a German policewoman in the process. Here are the names: Enver Şimşek, Abdurrahim Özüdoğru, Süleyman Taşköprü, Habil Kiliç, Mehmet Turgut, İsmail Yaşar, Theodoros Boulgarides, Mehmet Kubaşık, Halit Yozgat, Michèle Kiesewetter.
