Our Unfinished Novel
Notty Bumbo, 2017
What I sought in the ether
Left a silence I could not fathom,
Perhaps the stars grown weary of brilliance,
The oceans left motionless beneath a dull moon,
And all we hoped for once gone to trackless wastes.
We say "thank you,"
Meaning I am forgetful and lost,
And the last vestige of Mayan dreams
Follows the Gulf Stream north,
No warriors remaining to make this journey.
I called across the chasms,
Felt the echos of your grief
Fall against interminable rocks.
We have never had the chance we wished for,
The rains wash away the words we shared,
I still look for you among the ruins,
Though it does neither of us any good at all.
I only mean to say
I have forgotten I am lost,
There is no redemption for ignorance.
And your letters came back,
All those years unopened,
Stained with blood and clay.
What I sought for never had boundaries,
And that among so many things
Cannot be forgiven.
