Loath as I am to review digital releases, the limited edition cassette version of Blackthorn that included grave dirt sold out in a few hours after the band opened up sales online, so there wasn't much choice. Anyhow, Qayin Regis plays mysterious, occult-fueled black metal. As this is only an EP, three songs in under 20 minutes, we don't get much, but what we do get is impressive. The first track is a nine minute monstrosity that incorporates doom undertones and choral chanting, it manages to be enthralling and oppressive. Up next is a track that has more of a blackened death sound and finally a quiet, atmospheric piece with a spoken incantation. Sinister and majestic, Blackthorn is a striking introductory release from this Spanish act. And, at just €3, you have no excuse not to procure a copy yourself.
