3) Artist Statement:
The Palm Life Gaze series of compositions is an exploration of the dynamic form intrinsic to palm trees. Each piece encourages viewers to see beyond the established image of the palm tree as an icon of man-made paradise, to perceive instead the autonomous and harmonious visual qualities of these trees.
In order to galvanize an organic visual experience that transcends the iconic, I render the palm trees abstract in color, form, value, and scale. This abstraction discourages the all-too-natural fixation on the palm’s representational significance, ultimately bringing the viewer closer to appreciating the intrinsic beauty of the tree itself.
The concept behind my work is inspired by the photography of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, as well as the early abstract ideas of Arthur Dove, O’Keefe, Mondrian, Leger, and Kupka.
