Welcome to a world filled with deadly drag races for sport, routine mass killings called “the cleaning's”, and where the common house is the size of a closet. The story follows Manny, a fun loving, chop shop delivery boy on the run and in possession of what may be humanity’s last hope. The only problem is Manny’s world is a bunker the size of California and just about everyone in it wants him dead.
I have such a huge fan of Scout Comics since I’ve started to review their books. I don’t remember how A.C. and I got in touch with each other over Elasticator but since then I’ve been grateful for it. This time he’s back with a story as far from our stretchy hero wannabe and into a world where the future isn’t bright, instead it’s deadly and full of cyborg people, deadly assassin’s and rampant crime. As bleak as that sounds it is also home to Manny and this is his story.
I like the way this is structured as we open with a wordless assassination which then introduces us to a pair of hired guns seeking a job. It is during this that we get our first clue as to what is being sought after here. The transitions are well done and it has this great flow to it. It is very story oriented and doesn’t leave room for much characterisation but then again it really shouldn’t. This is a set-up to what is in store and a look at what it’s about so that when we meet the books main man that’s when we start getting the characterisation.
I have to say I kind of like this whole Back to the Future Marty McFly cyborg skateboarding on air introduction to Manny that we get. He has this whole demeanour about him that’s kind of happy go lucky not too bright kind of thing about him that is extremely likeable. Also that he doesn’t look like some super fit guy with bulging muscles and has a beer belly doesn’t hurt things either in getting the average guy thinking he could be like me.
Morgan has a very distinct style to his work. It is kind of a blend of underground comix, from back in the day, and an all-ages deal with some nice attention to detail. The way page layouts are used so that we see the angles and perspective show a nice eye for storytelling. That backgrounds are being utilised makes me a very happy fanboy and it does a lot to expand this world and how we are supposed to see it. Oh and the racing part with the cars yeah that was freakin sweet work. The faces are very unique and distinct and they have this feel to them that is hard to describe but you can recognise it when you see it.
So this very nicely gets us up to speed on what’s going on here. Manny’s buddy who came out of retirement to win the race and the prize which is sought after by a myriad of different folks all of whom are willing to openly kill anyone in their way is proof of that. With Rojo (?) dead and the prize in his possession what Manny is going to next is anyone’s guess but with the fate of mankind in his hands does mankind even stand a chance?
This exciting new series from Scout Comics is one that you’ll want to read. Can an everyday kind of guy who hasn’t amounted to much or wanted to save humanity, avoid assassin’s and come out on top?
