Grid Poems Vol. I. is a conceptual work of poetry, written by Brian Isett (neuroscientist-poet) and
designed by John Soat (artist-designer behind @pointinpassing). Part haiku, part sudoku, each grid poem is a 3 x 3 arrangement of lines written to allow two different intended readings: left-to-right vs. top-to-bottom. This structure allows subtly and drastically different perspectives to emerge from the same text.
Soat took the grid form and created a unique system of artistic constraints for designing and illustrating the book. The result is one continuous volumetric grid that bleeds through the cover to structure each subsequent page. To create the narrative glyphs that illustrate each chapter and poem, Soat isolated and deconstructed the negative visual space of the grid to its constituent line widths and square particles. This negative space then takes on a life of its own.
Grid Poems Vol. I. was printed in a limited edition run of 150 hardcover, cloth-bound copies.
1st edition, 132 pgs, printed by Conveyor Editions.
