I've been reading the criticisms of this site, which all (mostly) come
down to "it won't work." For anyone who's ever been involved with any
political movement, such criticism is awfully familiar.
you, that Ello or any of the other alternatives to the monolithic,
increasingly frightening system people are fleeing are necessarily
revolutionary or even better. The point is primarily that 'it's not
Facebook.' That is, people are actively attempting something else
because the thing 'everyone's doing' is authoritarian and claims too
much control over us.
Is this not, to some degree, similar to
resistance to Capitalism? Certainly, any one of these sites could
become totalitarian, just as really-existing Communism got frightful.
But the very act of refusing one thing and attempting another is what
reminds us that we can always keep escaping until something works,
rather than listening to the voice in our head (broadcast by others)
that every alternative is doomed to fail.
