Lucie Salgado ( @luciesalgado ) is a self-taught artist based in Curitiba, working in figurative drawing, abstract painting, photography, and creative writing. Her art is markedly observational, and often based on personal explorations on the processes of thought, emotion, and memory, here applied as a means to deepen her understanding of the world she inhabits.
What draws me to her art is that it's at once obsessed with the human form, but also cosmic – the human made up of stardust. It is also at once mythic and deeply scientific – there is something both fantastical and deeply clinical about the way she portrays people, and it gives them this incredible four-dimensionality. And through her art, Lucie herself feels like she is at once deeply human and also completely removed from humankind – like she inhabits her subjects but then detaches herself completely from them.
I spent a year searching the internet for artists to collaborate with on a project, and of the thousands I saw, Lucie was my favorite one. I think she deserves this award, and will go on to win many, many more.
