Portuguese Man of War
Close your eyes and pull your covers
tonight my shadow will give you horrors
emerging from closets and corners
Watch my sail reach you with tentacles
made to scratch you like sharp nails.
Once you look at me, my lights
will burn your eyes
Once you hear me, my sounds
will bleed your ears
Once you feel me, my caress
will bring you to tears.
Once you smell me, my breaths
will suffocate you with fears.
Once you taste me, my glands
will chew your chin and lips.
Once you touch me, my cells
will cut your skin like spears.
I come for ones like you- night owls
who can’t sleep in their house.
I feed on their souls feeding them fears
poking holes in them with tentacles
I am neither a ghost nor an octopus
I am the one and only Portuguese
man of war, for my venom seeks
children who are often sleepless
playing until late hours in their beds.
Close your eyes
lest you become food for flies.
Pull your covers above your face
and cover your eyes
lest I find your smiles
and leave you cold as ice!
