Anthousai an ancient Okeanid Titan left the ocean
to live under the sun and enjoy nature in color.
She loved to grow things and shed her beauty
in flowers to give meaning to the human world.
She wanted to create flowered tracks to enlighten
the humans with love, wisdom, kindness and warmth.
For wealth and friendship she grew pink Alstromerias.
And scarlet Amaryllis for worth beyond beauty.
Living on land taught her about seasons so she
gave humans violet anemones for hope & anticipation.
Listening to children’s laughter she appreciated
gardenias and made them white to symbolize peace.
Watching farmers grow things she understood abundance
and hospitality so she gave humans fuchsia Anthuriums.
Watching the ants throughout summer she learned about
patience and love for variety so she gave humans garnet Asters.
And from humming birds she appreciated daintiness and elegance
so she gave humans Birds of Paradise in tiger orange.
And one spring she saw two mountain rams clash for a mate
with great zeal for life, so she gave humans amaranth Bouvardias
Being invited to a wedding she saw humans exchange vows of eternal love
so she gave them white Calla Lilies and pink carnations for everlasting admiration
She heard Selene’s cries for Endymion’s affection in vain through the night sky
so she gave humans honey Chrysanthemums for fidelity and truth
and Tuscan sun colored Daffodils for rebirth and eternal life.
Then watching children at play she understood innocence & thoughtfulness
so she gave humans white Daisies, Hybrid Delphinium, and daffodil Freesias.
All was well until she saw a mother sacrifice her life for her children,
so she gave sacrifice bloody Gerberas, baby pink Gladiolus for remembrance
lavender Heathers for protection and sherbet Hyacinths for constancy.
Days went by, the kids grew up putting flowers on their mother’s tomb
so she grew indigo Hydrangea for gratitude, and purple Irises for passion.
She was sad to see the children’s step mother jealous, haughty, and vindictive
so she grew berry Larkspurs for haughtiness, yellow Hyacinths for jealousy
eggshell Cypresses for cruelty, and marigold Bird’s Foot Trefoil for vengeance.
Humans will always remember Anthousai for her flowered tracks on land.
