A beautiful maiden cursed
with beauty every man wants
fell in love with Farhad
a Turkish peasant.
She lived in a red cottage
in remote Mardin on a farm.
Each day she’d meet Farhad
and watch sunsets together.
One day three Dutch Templar
knights showed up as suitors
One gave her a crown indicating fame
the second gave her a sword indicating power
the third gave her gold indicating property.
All three gave her till sunset to make up
her mind or her family will be killed.
Being deeply in love with Farhad
the two eloped wandering in Lake Aaral’s
arid lands but they couldn’t find water.
See Lake Aaral today Lake Van was a saline
soda lake and that’s where Farhad began to tire.
He fainted amidst her fear, exhausted Shirin
began to dig a well but while doing so she
stabbed her finger with a poisoned dagger
buried in the sand and died that's when
Farhad woke up to find her dead.
Out of despair he threw himself off a cliff.
That night the sky cried and the land became red
with the lovers’ blood, by the time the knights
arrived, the crown turned into two tulips
red & gold the sword into a leaf
and the gold into a bulb.
The legend goes that mother nature
honored Shirin & Farhad with tulips
grown across Turkey & the Netherlands.
