Agnimitra & Azar
It happened that Ra the sun got fed up one
day searching for his only daughter Agnimitra.
She had the bad habit of hiding between meteors
asteroids, and planets while teasing stars & comets.
So he sent her to Earth to live beneath its crust
with his loyal subject Svarog aided by great
magician Hui Lu who had great firebirds
to drag his chariot each time Agnimitra moved.
Ra’s instructions were clear: no surfacing for her
and that Vulcan will give him a sign by erupting
if she ever disobeys his orders and surfaces.
In the far away kingdom of Time lived Cronus
who had eleven daughters and only one son Azar.
Like Agnimitra, Azar was playful unfit to be king.
Prometheus, was Cronus’ trusted vizier who was
also a very ambitious man who wanted the throne.
One day Cronus had it with Azar pulling the carpets
from underneath the feet of his eleven sisters.
Prometheus, advised the king that he & Azar
should embark on a journey of passage to make
the young man wiser, stronger, and fit to be king.
Cronus was wise & realized only love can save
his son and his kingdom from his ambitious vizier.
So he ordered Prometheus the human to accompany
Azar on a journey to find a most elaborate queen
among humans fit to bring forth an heir for his son.
After journeying for ninety days by land & sea
seeing all the beautiful maidens on Earth, Azar
finally met Maui who was a peaceful islander
told him about a magnificent goddess & maiden
trapped underground by a magician & fire-breather.
Maui was on a mission to bring back fire to his village
that was starving and afraid of the dark monsters.
So he offered Azar to accompany him on his journey
to mount Sansin to rescue the princess & make her his queen.
Being underground, both Hui Lu & Svarog have
never seen or heard a colored bird like a robin sing.
Maui was clever and spoke to the robin promising him
a permanent home in the woods with red color
for his wings if he agreed to help.
He then asked Azar to permit him to bring along
a young maiden called Hestia who was beautiful
and a great cook ;See Vulcan had never seen a
woman before and Hestia was quite lonesome
and was hoping for a handsome man.
Maui promised Hestia a wonderful man that lived
up in the mountain of Sansin, so as soon as they
arrived at the mountain, Hestia began to sing a sad song of love.
Vulcan was so enchanted by her voice he began to rise
from under the water until he saw her reflection.
He bubbled the water as she sang and spent the whole
day watching her sing giving Prometheus & Azar time
to enter Sansin’s deepest cave and descend underground.
Once they reached the garnet gates of Hades the Robin
flew low and perched on Hui Lu’s gourd where he kept
the firebirds and began to sing gleefully about the woods.
Azar sneaked carefully holding a feather of the robin’s tail
to tinker the lock that held the chains of Agnimitra and set her free.
Both Svarog & Hui Lu fell asleep listening to the robin
who flew out just time as Agnimitra’s smoke began to fill
the place and right before Vulcan captured Hestia and took her
to dwell with him as his bride & guardian of the hearths.
As they exited Sansin mountain, Prometheus and Azar
couldn’t see their way from the smoke of Agnimitra
but two beautiful maidens were there Minerva & Athena
who knew the woods and the paths around the mountain.
Because it was still day, Ra was shining & could see them
if they stepped out of the mist into the open so Maui
called on his two coyote friends Wabanaki & Shoshone
who in turn called in a favor from their ostrich friend
with big wings to carry Agnimitra under its wing in
a basket woven by grandma spider to enchantress & healer Brighid.
By sunset, Brighid had made a potion that camouflaged
Agnimitra’s flames with a custard skin made of lava.
She now looked human and could walk the earth without
Ra seeing her and she was pleased to see Azar fight for her.
She gave Maui a flame to take back to his village,
the Ostrich speed in running, the robin its red color,
Minerva & Athena were rewarded the spark of wisdom like fire
and Brighid was given an eternal flame to inspire bards & healers.
Both Agnimitra & Azar arrived home safe to Cronus
who rewarded Prometheus with a place in human history
for being the human that stole the flame for mankind
and was relieved of his post as vizier to live in human’s memories.
This story is my twist on the legends of fire gods and their consorts from Egypt, China, India, Maori, Persia, American Indian, South African, Roman, Greek, Lithuania, & Ireland.
