One spring morning while Sabine princess
Flora wife of Zephyrus an Okeanos nymph
was strolling in the prairie a pack of wolves
chased her and scratched her badly.
She ran so hard that she tumbled down
a hill into a meadow of purple lupines.
Feeling weak, scared, and helpless
she wept in pain and prayed to the gods.
Her prayers were answered in the winds
and the lupines began to sway like chimes
coaxing her to pick some of their petals
and place them like bandages on her wounds.
It is said that the lupines
drew all the soil’s nutrients
to heal her wounds.
She regained strength & left the woods
wearing a bonnet of lupine petals.
They say Flora blessed the lupines
with the gift of healing and imagination
and protected them from predators
by making them food only to blue butterflies
caterpillars & known for inspiring humans
to do acts of generosity & greatness.
Today people know lupines
as wolverine thieves
that heal wounds
by robbing soils
of their nutrients & as
Flora's blue bonnets
