Joha or the Ass
Joha and his son went to the market
to sell their donkey for some chocolate.
First they walked by the donkey
so the people said how idiot those must be.
Next Joha rode the donkey
so the people said how callous that father must be.
So Joha got down, the son climbed on the donkey’s
back, only to hear them say how ill mannered.
Now a little confused they both rode the donkey;
so the people went like: look at those heartless fools.
Desperate to please these folks,
Joha and his son carried the donkey.
Like a chorus all those in the market
shouted: look at that ass and his son!
No matter what you do be a guy or a lass
people will find something against you.
You are your only limit and period
no one should have a say or question.
So live your life for you to truly live
Don’t be Joha or an ass by letting someone run you.
Some local fables never get old. Joha was a famous Iraqi fable character as popular as Aesop in the Middle East. We usually use Joha's fable to remind us that life is too short to be lived as per people's expectations, recommendations, and choices. We were born with individual souls and bodies for a purpose to be original not copies so why do we have to conform or please people? Trouble begins when you start comparing and fitting yourself to molds from other people's lives. I hope you enjoyed this piece.
