Nope. Not cocaine. It's much more strange than that. Someone got the bright idea to market pure caffeine powder to consumers. And they're buying it in bulk. Ok, yes, the Darwin Award does exist for a reason. But really, this is just tragic.
"A teaspoon of the powder is equivalent to about 25 cups of coffee. Serious complications can include vomiting, diarrhea, stupor, disorientation, rapid heartbeat, seizures, and death."
"The LD50 (median lethal dose) of caffeine in humans is dependent on individual sensitivity, but is estimated to be about 150 to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass or roughly 80 to 100 cups of coffee for an average adult." (Wikipedia)
But much lower doses can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, panic attacks, aggressive behavior, disorientation, rapid heartbeat, seizures and so forth.
I've had at least two different patients I was ready to have 5150'd (committed involuntarily) for aggressive or psychotic behavior, where it was really just ongoing caffeine overdose. But they were drinking ridiculous amounts of sodas or coffee, that any reasonable person would have recognized as a potential problem. Using the powder form makes it much easier to do accidentally.
... just sayin' ...
