The small historic port town of Littleton in New Zealand suffered extensive damage during the major 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Many old buildings that were an integral part of its rich heritage and local culture were damaged and had to be torn down.
The way these structures are missed is testimony to the importance architecture plays in our lives, to its contribution to a unique sense of place, and to the connection we have to some of them that transcend one of simply ‘between user and utility’.
