"Monday Tips for Neurotypicals"
When an Autistic person is stimming, and you know they are Autistic and claim to have educated yourself about Autism and it's not causing you, them or anyone else any grave physical danger, it is not correct to say,
"You're so fucking rude" to us as we struggle to balance the sensory overload we are feeling. Now we have to try and stim that negative emotion away and may not be able to.
When an Autistic person has crossed the threshold and stimming was unable to mitigate the sensory overload and we've reached the meltdown stage, which is manifesting as the rapid firing of questions with no room for the other person to respond, it is NOT correct to say, well, interrupt to say,
"What kind of fucking trip are you on anyway?" as a way to stop the stream of questions.
The "trip" is called sensory overload, my brain is flooded with flight or fight response and I'm literally fighting or fleeing for my life as far as my brain is concerned.
SEE ME as a human not just the things I'm saying, and then you can help me.
SEE ME with empathy, but for pete's sake, just SEE me please.
I hope these tips have been helpful and you'll consider them in any future dealings you have with Autistic persons in your life.
As ALWAYS I am willing to discuss and educate further.
More tips next Monday.
