IF YOU DON'T EXIST, AT LEAST LET US KNOW ABOUT IT
This photograph reminds me a line form a song that the French singer, Patrick Bruel, sings about God: "If you don't exist, at least let us know about it".
Some people are going to church, but pay more attention to their smartphones screens, than to the priest's sermon. It has nothing to do with Christianity- it is the same everywhere. Whatever is the name people give "God", whatever the name of the religion, "God" or the "Gods" seem to have vanished.
I never believed in the presence of a personal divinity. I do recognize what I would call an "intelligent purpose" in Nature, in Evolution. I do believe there is a purpose to Life, something close perhaps to the Oriental concept of "Dharma"- the "Law of Nature".
I believe the individual purpose designated to each one of us, is maybe to search for this general purpose in Life. In other words, to know why we are living- and to live accordingly.
I don't believe in crime and punishment. I believe in luck, the way Cartier-Bresson understood it, when he said "we have to learn how to be lucky".
And if we can learn it, it means that there is a frame, there are laws. As a street photographer, I have learned to pay attention to what happens around me, and when I don't "see", it's not because nothing happens- it's rather because I lack attention. By paying attention, I can control my luck.
So... who is really in control here? Us- or at least we could be. But a personal divinity? My own private God...? Absolutely not!
